The Music Room
Music has an important place in Christian
worship, as it did in the worship at the temple. I
Chronicles 15:16-24
describes how David organized the temple choir and
orchestra 'to sing and
to play joyful music.' In the temple the singing
was often in parts--one
line of a section being sung by one group, and the
next sung in response
by another.
Church hymns, songs of praise to God that
paraphrase the Bible or invoke
ethical concepts, date from the time of the
ancient Hebrews. Church singing
has evolved from the one-syllable-to-a-note style
of hymns to the richly
musical, joyful sound of gospel music, and the
pop/rock sound of contemporary
Christian music.
